Wesfarmers-owned retail chains Bunnings and Kmart have bowed to general public stress and hit pause on using facial recognition engineering in their stores amid an investigation by the privacy watchdog.
The Place of work of the Australian Information Commissioner confirmed earlier this month it had opened a probe into the technological innovation, concentrating on how retail chains cope with personal information of consumers.
The investigation adopted a report from customer advocacy team Choice about Bunnings’ and Kmart’s use of the facial recognition know-how.
A Kmart spokeswoman verified the use of the technological innovation had been paused and was only supposed to stop theft.
“We consider our use of facial recognition technology for the minimal objective of blocking criminal activity these types of as refund fraud is appropriate and its use is issue to strict controls,” she reported.
“We do not use this technology to track customer conduct or for marketing purposes.
“We have temporarily stopped the use of this technological innovation in our modest number of trial shops presented the graduation of the OAIC investigation.”
Selection revealed the names of significant vendors not scheduling to use facial recognition technological know-how on Sunday, including grocery store giants Woolworths, Coles, Aldi.
