Art Week inspires new murals in Drake neighborhood

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Artwork Pageant is still a couple days absent, but a person of the city’s most eclectic neighborhoods has new general public artwork in advance of the festivities.

Artists painted murals on two structures around Drake University for Des Moines Artwork Week. A piece on the Kinne Heart depicts an abstract bulldog, a nod to Drake University’s mascot. The other mural, which can be identified on the corner of College Avenue and 25th Road, exhibits a sunrise and visually retells the Drake neighborhood’s historical past.

Jennifer Gauerke, the artist of the dawn mural, built-in silhouettes of authentic Drake neighborhood inhabitants and newspaper clippings from Drake’s university student paper into her artwork.

She hopes the art evokes Des Moines citizens to understand the special bond inside the Drake group.

“I hope that they see that individuals treatment about the neighborhood,” Gauerke stated. “When the building was sitting down below gray, you really don’t know what is happening, but persons do treatment and are putting in hard work. We may not generally hear their names or what they’re executing, but people treatment or the community would not be as vivid as it is.”

Des Moines Art Week is also inspiring occasions in other neighborhoods, together with Franklin and Columbus Park.
